Abstract: This webinar is part of a four-part series about EMC with a focus on switched mode power supplies.
The first section of this presentation will be theoretical providing a basic overview of the “generation” of disturbances. This will be followed by information about several mitigation strategies that can be easily combined. The presentation will provide information about using a PFC, including which types are available. Additionally the presentation will cover filtering and its pitfalls, snubber, controlling mechanism, and other technologies such as spread spectrum. This will provide the attendees with an idea of what to be aware of when creating the layout.
The presentation will include different approaches to meet the emission requirements using switched mode power supplies. Depending on the reasons for the high emissions, some mitigations may be more efficient than others. In most situations, one single mitigation will not be sufficient and a set of remedial actions will be necessary to meet the requirements.
The presentation will conclude with a live demonstration showing the effect of common mode noise, caused by the coupling mechanism against a metallic structure and against PE. This can be very tricky, as very often the “physical” connection is not seen, but over parasitics, this coupling mechanism causes problems.
