Magnetics design
We have a unique and exciting career opportunity for a Magnetics Design Engineer. Reporting to the site Engineering Manager, you will be responsible for developing and documenting magnetic component designs for product development projects.
The position is also responsible for developing magnetic component winding instructions, defining proper insulation materials and techniques, including potting, and participating in design-for-manufacturing (DFM) efforts. In addition, close interface and direction of internal and external Magnetics Fabrication resources is required. The position is responsible for operating within defined project and process boundaries, and for championing evolutionary changes to the Magnetics design, documentation and fabrication process.
Responsibilities:
· Accept power/pulse magnetics component designs from Design Engineers and review for electrical and thermal performance, and manufacturability. Knowledge of state-of-the-art magnetics design and fabrication techniques is required.
· Develop build/winding instructions and determine potting/insulation system. This will include working closely with Manufacturing Engineering and Operations to develop build instructions that are efficient, repeatable and reliable.
· Analyze magnetic designs using both hand calculations and commercially available software. Specific to this task are the accurate identification of power dissipation of magnetic components, including:
o Core loss
o Copper loss
o Skin effect
o Proximity effects
o Fringing
· Evaluate high voltage magnetic designs and develop winding, assembly, heatsinking and potting techniques that minimize corona to acceptable levels and result in parts with long term reliability. Develop associated corona test techniques and procedures.
· Accountable for maximizing usage of available standard solution sets on product development programs, and for identification of required extensions and/or additions.
· Provide loss information to Mechanical Engineering and assist in proper calculation of hotspot temperature and design of proper cooling mechanism.
· Provide support in the preparation of new business proposals and capture plans.
· Establish and maintain proactive communication channels with internal customers, suppliers, subcontractors and with other CRANE organizations as required to achieve project goals.
· Meet customer and CRANE requirements for the project in terms of performance, quality, recurring and non-recurring cost, and customer satisfaction.
· Generate and implement a project plan which defines primary deliverables with associated responsibilities, timing, dependencies, risks / mitigations, and costs in support of customer and Crane objectives.
· Develop labor and material cost targets for magnetic sub-assembly and component levels and lead design to cost process.
· Integrate test equipment / procedure and manufacturing process development activities and personnel into overall product development process.
· Participate in design and peer reviews in accordance with Crane standards and project plan.
· Provide feedback to product line planning, standard solution sets, and lessons learned databases.
Minimum Requirements:
· 6 or more years of experience including comprehensive product technical and application knowledge in the Magnetics industry, including high voltage transformers and corona minimization techniques.
· BS or equivalent in an appropriate technical discipline (preferably Electrical Engineering).
· Proven design leadership ability including demonstrated ability to work within cross-functional teams. Good interpersonal skills with the ability to work within teams and across company boundaries.
· Extensive experience in a technical position in Engineering, including experience instructing and assisting manufacturing personnel in the build and potting of magnetics components.
· Ability to assess compatibility of available technology to applications, to evaluate risks, and to devise and implement mitigation plans.
· Good communication skills, including experience in presentations before customers and internal groups.
Special Work Conditions:
· Applicants selected could be subject to a Government security investigation and must meet the eligibility requirements for access to classified information.
· Eligibility requirements include U.S. nationals or permanent residents (Green Card).
