CENELEC is the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization and is responsible for standardization in the electrotechnical engineering field. CENELEC prepares voluntary standards, which help facilitate trade between countries, create new markets, cut compliance costs and support the development of a Single European Market.

CENELEC creates market access at European level but also at international level, adopting international standards wherever possible, through its close collaboration with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), under the Dresden Agreement.

Manufacturers of audio/video (A/V), information technology (IT) and communication technology products need to know that CENELEC has accepted a new standard IEC 62368-1 as a mandatory requirement for CE marking of low-voltage equipment sold in the European Union (EU). IEC 62368-1 will replace two standards currently in use – EN 60065 for A/V and EN 60950-1 for IT and communication technology equipment – and will apply to new and existing products. Additionally, the U.S. and Canada adapted a national version of the IEC 62368-1 standard titled CSA/UL 62368-1.

The American and European bodies have harmonized the date from which the 60950-1 and 60065 standards will cease and 62368-1 will take over. Following a recent update to the EU’s Official Journal (OJ) of legislation, and subsequent announcement by UL in the USA, the new date is December 20, 2020.
