OPSS notice regarding enforcement on energy labelling

From 1 January 2021, energy labelling will be changing in England, Wales and Scotland.  Products newly placed on the market from this date will require a UK energy label.  Dealers will also need to display this new label.

Please read this guidance for more information on these new energy labels and relevant requirements.

Further changes are also taking place from 1 March 2021, when legislation mandating the use of new, re-scaled energy labels will be coming into force for some products. There will also be a UK energy label for these re-scaled energy labels. Prior to this date suppliers must provide dealers with access to these labels. From 1 March 2021, dealers will have 14 working days to ensure re-scaled labels are displayed. The product types subject to re-scaling are:

  • dishwashers
  • washing machines and washer-dryers
  • domestic refrigerators, freezer, and wine storage fridges
  • electronic displays, including televisions monitors and digital signage displays

Please use this dedicated UK energy label generator, which is available for economic operators to support these changes.

Consumers may still see former versions of EU energy labels for goods placed on the market prior to 1 January 2021 as goods lawfully placed on the market before this date can be sold even though the transition period has ended.

OPSS will support economic operators to ensure the changes take place as smoothly as possible.

Where breaches of the new rules are identified, OPSS will address these with suppliers in a proportionate manner, having regard to all of the circumstances, in line with our enforcement policy.

For more information or if you have any questions, please contact the OPSS enquiry system.
