Happy 30th Anniversary to Cellphones
PSMA recognizes the contribution of power supplies and power electronics toward this anniversary of cellular handsets.

In 1983 the FTC approved the first cellular handset for public use, and Motorola announced the first commercially available cellphone. Cellular has changed a lot since then:

  • Originally cellular used analog technology. Now cellular uses digital technology.
  • Handsets are now smaller and lighter with longer talk times.
  • Cellphones
    • enable productivity,
    • communicate,
    • entertain,
    • provide safety, and even
    • promote health & wellness

The power electronics industry is proud to enable all these exciting changes with products such as:

  • Power supplies and battery chargers
  • Ultra low dropout (LDO) voltage regulators with low noise
  • Power management integrated circuits (PMICs)
  • White LED drivers for backlights & camera flash
  • Various DC-DC converters and power factor correction (PFC) for cellular basestations

In addition, the power electronics industry looks forward to each challenge as cellular continues to evolve.
