APEC 2017 Sustains Record Growth; Plans Now Underway for APEC 2018 in San Antonio

A fter the very successful APEC 2016 in Long Beach, there were some concerns that the 2017 event in Tampa might slow the growth trend that we have experienced over the past ten years. Remarkably, Tampa continued the growth rates in virtually every category, with attendance exceeding Long Beach in full conference, technical session and education seminar registrations. Total registration was down by about 500, with nearly two-thirds of this lower count attributed to fewer exhibitor registrations – that in spite of the fact that we had more companies (266 vs. 263) and more booth spaces (432 vs. 394) than in Long Beach.

The reviews that have come in about Tampa have been universally positive. APEC 2017 retains its claim as “The Premier Global Event in Applied Power Electronics” with 574 Technical Papers, 18 Professional Education Seminars and 120 Industry Session presentations.

Plans are fully underway for APEC 2018 in San Antonio, March 4-8. As we close the books on APEC 2017, there are already 246 companies signed up to exhibit at APEC 2018. In addition, the big and important job of selecting the papers, seminars and industry sessions is just getting underway. Submissions for all categories of presentations are made via the Presenter Portal (www.apec-conf.org/speakers/).

Call for Papers for Technical Sessions - Now Open

Submissions of digests of technical papers for consideration are due by late July. Prospective authors are asked to submit a digest explaining the problem that will be addressed by the paper, the major results, and how this is different from the closest existing literature. Papers presented at APEC must be original material and not have been previously presented or published. The principal criteria in selecting digests will be the usefulness of the work to the practicing power electronic professional. Reviewers value evidence of completed experimental work.

Call for Professional Education Seminar Proposals – Opens in Early July

Professional Education Seminars at APEC 2018 will address the need for in-depth discussion of important and complex power electronics topics. Submission are due by early September. Seminars are three-and-a-half hours (including breaks) in length, can range from broad to narrow in scope, and can vary from introductory to advanced in technical level. Topics are to address the practical issues of the specification, design, manufacture and marketing of power electronic components, products, and systems.

Call for Presentations for Industry Sessions – Opens in Early July

The Industry Sessions run in parallel with the technical sessions and have proven to be very popular. Submissions for proposed presentations are due by early September. Speakers are invited to make a presentation only and are not required to submit a formal paper. The target audience for the Industry Sessions differs from typical technical sessions and includes system engineers/architects and business-oriented people such as marketing and sales, purchasing agents, information technologists, regulatory agencies, and others who support the power electronics industry.

Make your plans now to be part of APEC 2018 and add this important event on your calendar and in your budget for next year. And do your part to make it an even better conference by volunteering to be on the peer-review panel in areas where you are qualified.
See you in San Antonio!
